Library Overview

The library is affiliated to the Postgraduate Studies and Research Sector at the faculty. It occupies a single hall housing about 10,560 books, including approximately 4,367 books in Arabic language and 6,193 books in foreign languages. In addition, the library holds more than 1,200 master and Ph.D. theses, as well as a number of specialized periodicals. These collections cover various fields including tourism studies, hotel management, and Tourist Guidance, and   some general subjects.

The services provided by the library including both internal and external lending, as well as developing specialized databases regarding bibliographic information and abstracts of the scientific theses it holds. The library offers its services free of charge to students of the faculty and other faculties affiliated to Helwan University, whereas visitors from outside the university pay fees set by the General Administration of Libraries of Helwan University. The library continually expands its collections through purchases and donations. It is noteworthy that all books and scientific references available in the library are also accessible on the Egyptian Universities Libraries Union website.

The library staff attempt to deliver services effectively and efficiently as a core part of their mission. This is achieved through organizing information resources, improving the offered services and innovating new ones to maximize the benefits presented by the library.

Library Services
1- On-site Reading:

Three sections have been the undergraduate section, the postgraduate section, and the general knowledge section. The postgraduate section contains the latest reference materials recently purchased, in addition to the scientific theses available in the library. Meanwhile, the general knowledge section houses books and references that are not related to the faculty’s specialized academic fields.

2- The Library Magazine" activity:

A new student activity called the Library Magazine has been established for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. One issue of the magazine is published online each semester in PDF format. It includes articles related to tourism, hospitality, tourist guidance, heritage, antiquities and museum studies. The magazine is supervised by faculty staff joined the library committee, and is published on the official Facebook page of the Postgraduate Studies and Research Sector.  The participating students are honored with certificates of appreciation, and photos of the award ceremony are displayed on the page.

3- Inquiry Response Service:

This service involves responding to the users’ inquiries related to the way of usage the library’s collections. When users are present at the library; library staff guide them to get the materials on the shelves and explain various systems and regulations. Additionally, inquiries can be answered via the library’s official email: Library@fth.helwan.edu.eg.

4- Full Abstracts of Theses:

The library receives full abstracts of theses from the postgraduate Studies Department in a paper form (received from Traditional and New programs) since August 2021. Each researcher is required to summarize his thesis in 13 lines, and these abstracts are available. A voluntary student activity called the “Library Support Team” was established to support in writing these abstracts in the library’s computer system as a database, whereas a number of library committee's members review them. Thus, the library now has a database of these abstracts, both in paper and electronic forms, for each academic department.

5- Previous Exams:

The library provides previous exams for students of undergraduate as well as postgraduate levels to help them familiarize themselves with the exam standards for each subject.

6- Bibliographic Data for All Books and References:

Database have been prepared containing bibliographic data (thesis title, researcher's name, academic department, supervisors’ names, grant date, academic degree) for master and Ph.D. theses  in an Excel file, on the library’s computer. This data is also posted on the official Facebook page of the Graduate Studies and Research sector to be announced. Bibliographic data for all books received by the library until February 2025 are available on the Egyptian Universities Libraries Unit website.

7- Book Borrowing Service:

The library introduced a simplified computer-based system to record book borrowings, along with the traditional paper work. This system facilitates quick and easy responses to inquiries regarding book availability, whether in the library or currently borrowed, and the due return dates.

8- Graduation Projects for Fourth-Year Students

The library keeps previous graduation projects for the fourth-year students of the Hotel Management Department, to help current students look at these projects.

General Guidelines:
  • Students of Helwan University must present their student ID or payment receipt, and visitors must show their national ID card.
  • Personal data must be recorded in the library.
  • Fees must be paid by outside visitors / outside Helwan University.
  • Personal belongings must be stored in the lockers outside the library.
  • Visitors must sit only in the designated areas according to their category (undergraduate, postgraduate, faculty).
  • Maintain silence and avoid using mobile phones inside the library.
  • Food and drinks are not permitted.
  • Returning books to their correct shelves is required, if unsure, the student can leave them on the desk.

Library Rules:
  • External borrowing of periodicals and theses is not allowed.
  • The library receives and responds to inquiries via its official university email: Library@fth.helwan.edu.eg.
  • Copies of previous exams for both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the three academic departments are available. The library also holds some graduation projects, related to Hotel Management Department.
  • The library offers a service to search for borrowed books via the computer system before physically searching, to save time and effort.
  • Postgraduate students can access electronic abstracts of master and Ph.D. theses granted by the faculty since the academic year 2021/2022, via the library’s computer system.
  • Communicating with the library staff  is welcome.
  • Suggestions for library improvement are welcome and can be written in the suggestions' book.
